Using white sage, Palo Santo, or other cleansing herbs, this step-by-step smudging guide shows you how to cleanse your home with smoke, from lighting your smudge stick to the final wisp of smoke.
What Is Smudging?
Smudging is a traditional smoke cleansing ceremony that involves burning a smudge stick or incense to clear a space of negative energy. It is one of the oldest forms of spiritual cleansing, rooted in the belief that smoke itself carries the power to transform what it touches — drawing stagnant energy out and leaving room for something clearer to settle in.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What's the difference between white sage and Palo Santo for smudging?
A: White sage smudging is traditionally used for deep, thorough clearing of negative energy, while Palo Santo smudging carries a sweeter, softer smoke often favored for everyday purification and inviting calm. Both are effective; the choice often comes down to intention and personal connection.
Q: How often should I smudge my space?
A: Many practitioners smudge their space weekly, after conflict or illness, or whenever a room feels heavy or stagnant. There is no fixed rule — let the feeling of the space itself guide the rhythm.
Q: Can I use incense instead of a smudge stick?
A: Yes. Incense for smudging offers a similar purifying effect and is a gentle alternative for those who want a quieter, less smoke-heavy ceremony, particularly in smaller spaces.
